On 8 May 2025, the “Forum on the Development and Application of DC Transmission Technologies for New-Type Power Systems and First Anniversary Summary Meeting of the Commissioning of the Yangzhen DC Phase I Project,” hosted by State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd. and the School of Electrical Engineering, Southeast University, and co-hosted by the IEEE PES China Chapters Council, was convened in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province. Gu Wei, Deputy Party Secretary of the School of Electrical Engineering, Southeast University, who is currently presiding over the School’s overall work, and Hua Wei, Associate Dean currently presiding over the School’s work, attended the meeting as representatives of the organizers.

The convening of this forum coincided with the first anniversary of the commissioning of the Yangzhen DC Phase I Project, China’s first “embedded” AC-to-DC conversion project. The event aimed to jointly explore development pathways for new-type power systems, promote the green and low-carbon transformation of the energy sector, and contribute to the realization of China’s “dual-carbon” goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

The forum featured a main forum and three parallel sub-forums. During the main forum, Wang Zhiwei, Level-III Consultant and professor-level senior engineer of State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd., Professor Zhang Xiaoping from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, and Tian Jie, Deputy Chief Engineer and researcher-level senior engineer of NARI Relays Electric Co., Ltd. in Nanjing, delivered keynote speeches entitled “Planning and Construction Practices and Reflections on the Jiangsu AC–DC Hybrid Power Grid,” “Duality Theory for High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Technologies,” and “Development and Prospects of Key Technologies for DC Transmission Control and Protection,” respectively.

In Sub-forum I, focusing on “Flexible AC/DC Transmission Technologies,” Professor Xu Zheng and Professor Huang Ying from Zhejiang University, Professor He Jinghan from Beijing Jiaotong University, Associate Professor Yu Lujie from the team of Professor Zhu Jiebei at Tianjin University, and Associate Professor Li Zhou from Southeast University delivered academic presentations from the perspectives of DC equipment topologies, control and protection, grid-forming technologies, and the operation and control of AC–DC hybrid power grids. In parallel, Sub-forum II presented summaries and reflections on the planning, construction management, operation and maintenance scheduling, local coordination, commissioning and testing, design, construction, and supervision of the Yangzhen DC series of projects. In Sub-forum III, experts from enterprises including State Grid Energy Research Institute, China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI), XJ Electric Co., Ltd., State Grid Jiangsu Economic and Technical Research Institute, NARI Relays, China Southern Power Grid Electric Power Research Institute, NARI Semiconductor, CRRC Times Semiconductor, State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Research Institute, Siyuan Electric Co., Ltd., and State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Research Institute introduced the development and application of advanced key equipment for AC and DC transmission.

In total, more than 30 thematic reports were presented at the forum, showcasing China’s achievements in building new-type power systems from the perspectives of academia, project development and construction, and equipment manufacturing. Building on this conference as a new starting point, the school will give full play to its disciplinary strengths, further strengthen relevant research, work together with industry partners to promote technology transfer and application, and inject strong momentum into the development of China’s electrical engineering discipline and the realization of the country’s “dual-carbon” goals.
