Biography

Prof. Ming Cheng received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Southeast University, Nanjing, China, in 1982 and 1987, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, in 2001, all in electrical engineering.

Since 1987, he has been with Southeast University, where he is currently a Chair Professor at the School of Electrical Engineering and the Director of the Research Center for Wind Power Generation. His teaching and research interests include electrical machines, motor drives for electric vehicles, renewable energy generation, and servo motor & control. He has authored or co-authored more than 600 technical journal papers, 8 books and 5 book chapters including 2 encyclopedias, and is the holder of over 180 patents including 15 US utility patents in these areas. He received the Second Prize of the State Technology Invention Award of China by the State Council of China in 2016, the First Prize of Natural Science Award by Ministry of Education, China in 2013 and 2023 respectively, the First Prize ofScience and Technology Progress Award by Jiangsu Province, China in 2019 and 2026 respectively, First Prize of Science and Technology Award by China Machinery Industry Federation in 2015, the Environmental Excellence in Transportation Award for Education, Training and Public Awareness by SAE in 2007, IET Achievement Medal by IET in 2021, etc.

From 2002 to 2009, he served as the Dean of School of Electrical Engineering, Southeast University. As a Visiting Professor, he worked in the Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics Consortium (WEMPEC), the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA from January to April, 2011, and in the Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University, Denmark in June-July, 2012 and August 2015, respectively. He was the inaugural Chair of IEEE Nanjing Section IAS/PES Joint Chapter in 2008-2017. He served as the Member-at-Large of IEEE IAS Executive Committee in 2017-2018, and the Member of the Administrative Committee of IEEE Magnetics Society in 2017.

Prof. Cheng is the Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of IET and Member of European Academy of Science and Arts. He has served as the Chair and an Organizing Committee Member for many international conferences. He was a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Industry Application Society in 2015/2016.
