1. Institute Name

Power System Automation Institute

2. Institute Overview

Power System AutomationInstitute, affiliated with the School of Electrical Engineering at Southeast University, is oriented towards the development needs of new power systems and closely integrated with national energy strategic requirements. It has long been dedicated to tackling major fundamental theories and frontier key technologies in power systems. Relying on profound academic accumulation and industry-university-research transformation capabilities, multiple research achievements have been successfully industrialized, playing a vital role in enhancing the security, stability, and intelligence of the power grid.

3. Research Directions

Focusing on the key issues of new power systems, the Institute has formed a multi-directional coordinated research system, mainly including power system analysis, cyber-physical power system planning, operation and simulation, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and big data.

4. Team Building

The team currently consists of 2 professors, 5 associate professors, and over 50 postdoctoral researchers, doctoral students, and master's students. The core members and their research directions are as follows:

Tang Yi, Director, Professor, and PhD supervisor, focuses primarily on power system stability analysis and control, cyber-physical systems for power grids, artificial intelligence, and power big data.

Li Zhou, Deputy Director, Associate Professor, and PhD supervisor, focuses primarily on AC/DC hybrid transmission technology and renewable energy generation and control technology.

Ye Yujian, Professor and PhD supervisor, focuses primarily on power market modeling and analysis, as well as the application of artificial intelligence in power and energy systems.

Wang Yurong, PhD, Associate Professor, focuses primarily on power system voltage stability and optimization theory and methods.

Wang Qi, Associate Professor and PhD Supervisor, focuses primarily on research in power grid cyber-physical systems and cybersecurity.

Feng Shuang, Associate Professor and PhD Supervisor, focuses primarily on research in power system stability and control, as well as the application of power electronics technology in power systems.

Zhang Yuanshi, PhD, Associate Professor, focuses primarily on research in optimization algorithms for power systems, multi-terminal DC grids, and the operation and control of microgrids.

5. Research Platforms

The Institute relies on the Southeast University Liyang Research Institute to carry out industry-university-research collaborative innovation. Co-established by Southeast University and the Jiangsu Liyang High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, the Southeast University Liyang Research Institute focuses on the research and development of key technologies in smart grids, renewable energy, and the dual-carbon domains. It features research platforms such as the Joint R&D Center for Renewable Energy Technologies and a Postdoctoral Research Workstation. In 2023, the institute established a Proof of Concept Center, focusing on breaking through bottlenecks such as the long cycles and high risks in the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, thereby building a full-chain transformation model of "basic research - proof of concept - pilot production." Through the tripartite collaboration of the university, government, and enterprises, it promotes the commercialization of university scientific and technological achievements, improves transformation efficiency, optimizes the ecological environment for technology transformation, and fully leverages the collaborative innovation capabilities among the government, universities, and enterprises.

6. Research Achievements

In recent years, the Institute has undertaken 2 projects and over 10 sub-projects under the National Key R&D Program, 15 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, and more than 100 scientific research projects from the headquarters and provincial branches of the State Grid Corporation of China. It has won over 10 provincial and ministerial-level awards. Over the past five years, the team has published more than 100 SCI-indexed papers and over 120 EI-indexed papers, and participated in the formulation of 5 grid-related standards.

Relevant research achievements have been successfully applied in multiple engineering projects, including the Xiamen Tongxiang Distribution Cyber-Physical System Demonstration Project, the Cheniushan Island Microgrid Demonstration Project, the Jiangsu Yancheng Wind Power as Black Start Power Source Project, and the Qinghai Photovoltaic Power Station Grid Integration Project.
